In the "Avengers: War of Infinity" - as the Writer Steve McFley told - Tanos wants to collect the stones of infinity to "re-equip the universe as he sees." And the head of Marvel Kevin Faigi said that the Motivation of Tanos in "Avengers 3" will be similar to the motivation of this super villain in the series of original comic MARVEL "Infinity Gauntlet).

Ship Tanos

The history of the origin of Tanos and his motivation is actually understandable and can even earn a well-known sympathy:
Tanos is a native of the planet Titan, which for many years before the start of the "Avengers: War of Infinity" was on the verge of death: resources were missing, and overpopulation threatened the very existence of the planet. Tanos offered his relative solution to his relatives - "truncate" the population is twice as well, choosing victims at random, so that you save the rest. Of course, the inhabitants of Titan, this radical plan rejected, the Tanos himself was declared a madman and sent to the link - but Titan did not help it, and the planet died. The Tashos took over the role of a "great equalizer" and now travels from the planet to the planet, "manually" by adjusting its development and correcting the balance.
