The cause of the conflict was the reluctance of the Phoenix attend the preliminary reading of the script. It did not like it. De Niro, who turned to the director Todd Phillips with such words:
Tell him [Phoenix] that he is an actor and he needs to be in place ... I want to hear the film entirely, so we will all gather in the same room and just read the script.
The Phoenix answered this:
Damn with two, I will not participate in the tweet.
As you can see, a supporter of the classic approach of de Niro far did not immediately worked with an initial phoenix, but as a result, the actors still came to a compromise.
