In an interview with Entertainment Tonight Nolan compared Casting Harry Stiles in Dunkirk with a choice of a Ledger hit on the role of Joker in the Dark Knight. In both cases, candidates were relatively little-known - at least, by the standards of Hollywood blockbusters with a multi-million budget ("Dark Knight" at one time, Warner Bros cost. In 180 million dollars). As the director admitted, in both cases he was guided by instincts, not business logic:
"When I invited a Hit Ledger to the role of Joker in the" Dark Knight ", many were also surprised and discussed this decision. I trusted my instincts, and Harry was an ideal candidate for this role in Dunkirk, "said Nolan.
Not always the stars of show business, appearing in the "big" movie even in Kameo, they demonstrate a really good acting talent - but Harry Stiles seem to be an exception. Judging by the first reviews of film critics, Stiles managed to convince them with his actor's game and in Dunkirk looks quite worthy - so Nolan, as usual, was not mistaken in his decision.
