In one of the recent interviews, the Content-Director of HBO Max Casey Blocus said:

" They do not try to say that these characters are again experiencing the same as in 30 years. It is pretty much the story of women at the age of 50, and they deal with things with which people are dealing with their 50. "
Blosus explained that in reality people appear in each other's life, and then they can disappear, and it is precisely such peripetias that the absence of Samantha will be explained.
"Friendship is fading, and a new friendship begins. So I think that all this is very significant for real stages, real stages of life, "the HBO Max boss noted.
He also added that the heroine of the series will try to "truthfully tell the story about what is the 50-year-old woman in New York." And it seems quite logical that not all relationships originated in 30 years will continue to two decades later.
