Burton shared that the main character was inspired by his own sense of loneliness when the director was a teenager. The condition of permanent struggle with the surrounding world in which the boy was located, prompted cinematographer to draw a sketch of a person with scissors instead of hands, which later turned into the idea of ​​the film.
